second station of the resurrection

What must it have been like for the two disciples who were closest to Jesus to run to the place where he'd been laid.  When have you suffered a dream shattered, a hope deferred only to discover that all was not lost, and in fact, maybe new life had burst forth? Like when a door closed, leaving you disappointed or worse depressed, only to have a new door open and new life flood in? Maybe a job interview didn't result in that longed-for new job, or a relationship you'd hoped for ended.

In this resurrection story, the two disciples discover the risen Lord together. In the first resurrection story, the two women make the discovery together. Sometimes, it really helps to have someone else, a friend, to witness what has happened in our lives. Our friends can help us hold on to what exactly just happened and what it means! and we can do that for our friend, too.

- Where am I being invited to look more closely at the signs that something big is about to change? or signs that something new is being revealed about my life?
- Is there someone in my life who helps me to see more closely, or more accurately what is being revealed?
-Difficulty understanding what is only partially revealed... can I live with uncertainty? or live with the question: what is God doing here? can I find someone to be my companion in this not knowing but in the question?

third station
The Risen Lord appears to Mary Magdalen, the Apostle to the Apostles

John 20:14b-18

13-14 “They took my Master,” she said, “and I don’t know where they put him.” After she said this, she turned away and saw Jesus standing there. But she didn’t recognize him.
15 Jesus spoke to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Who are you looking for?”
She, thinking that he was the gardener, said, “Mister, if you took him, tell me where you put him so I can care for him.”
16 Jesus said, “Mary.”
Turning to face him, she said in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” meaning “Teacher!”
17 Jesus said, “Don’t cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I ascend to my Father and your Father, my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene went, telling the news to the disciples: “I saw the Master!” And she told them everything he said to her.

Jesus called Mary by name. Have you ever heard your name and felt really known or recognized. God calls us by name and we stand at attention, or feel called forth. When someone who really knows us and calls us by name we are invited to come back to ourselves. As we are called, we are at the same time invited to be our most authentic and true selves. In that, we may be invited to act in a particular way, respond to life in a particular and new way. Stand firm or act decisively in that most authentic way. In doing that we are giving authentic witness to the risen Lord.. because we believe in the risen Lord and act accordingly.

Mary, called by name, announces to the disciples that she has seen the Lord.
How would anyone recognize our having seen the Lord by our actions?
How do we witness to others that we have seen the Lord? that we have experienced the resurrection?

thoughts on CPE

It is becoming clear... oh so slowly... but honestly, that our children do not need me to be available to them 24/7 for emotional support. I have for a long time placed myself on alert in the event that they needed me, I would be available.. somehow afraid that if I turned my attention to something else, that I would not be able to attend to them, IF they called on me. in the meantime, I've tried to amuse myself with other activities... to fill up my day with meaningful, productive, peaceful activities. Swimming, women's groups, mass, shopping, food prep, home maintenance and creation, maintaining extended family connections, always praying for the boys when they come to mind. I would worry to myself: wow, if I were working even part time, but especially full time, how would I get all this stuff done. If the car needed maintenance or there were jury duty... I sit here at home after Costco shopping and realize that Pete enjoys shopping... let him do it!! I could be using some of my gifts and finding meaning in that instead of just biding my time. Next step? talk to the CPE people at Alta Bates...

today, smells, textures, feelings, sounds...

I think I'll recall the experience I had as a little girl of the sound of the B52's coming in to land and take off from Columbus AFB in 1960-1963. When I was little my father served in the USAF as a B52 navigator. He flew "alert" and would be gone for some period of time and would fly missions through the air of North America mostly as I understand it. He would come home, always, and life would go on. Sometimes, and I really don't know how often, my mother would take us down to the flight line and we would stand by our car and watch the planes come and go. It was a memorable experience. The planes themselves were huge and they made a frighteningly loud noise... rumbling really and one of power, the likes of which I'd never heard in my short life before. It was overwhelming... the sound being as powerful to my being as seeing Yosemite from the valley floor for the first time. We were enveloped in this rumbling, all encompassing sound, above which no voice could be heard and hardly any other thought could be sustained as it consumed all of ones attention.  Beneath and beyond all of the sensation of this experience was the awareness that "that was our daddy in that plane" and "daddy is coming home". This is one of the earliest memories I have of sound. For many years the sight of a big military plane and the sound of its rumble would evoke a warm, secure feeling in my chest... I am safe because my daddy is home. Unfortunately, the specter of the 9/11 airplanes supplanted that association and I have to dig a little deep to recall that early experience and that early innocent surety.

saturday, September 21, last day of summer or first day of fall

Pete and I said goodbye to our John again today.. as he left for his junior year of college at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He was really ready to go more than a week ago, but he had received faulty information. He couldn't actually move in a week early as he'd been told. So, he had to cool his heels and spend another week at home. He made good use of the time... doing a little more work for his grandfather, and for us and for his aunt and uncle. He made a little more money and was able to pay off his car insurance and the television he bought for his dormitory. I love John. because he brings such depth and sincerity and peace to my world. I am so so lucky to know him and to be his mother. All of our boys are precious loving people. This summer gave me such a wonderful LOT of time to spend with John and to talk and to share and get to know eachother. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this time with him. It was golden.

spirituality of motherhood

Give it up!! Give it UP! Give IT up!! Under what illusion am I functioning where I think that I can live my own life? that I can sail through life unaffected by the lives of others ... and somewhere along the line, the world has succeeded in sending me the message that I have control over my own life.. that I can choose everything... what school I go to, what car I buy, what food I eat and how I'm going to spend my days... nothing else in life I don't think so undermines that myth than motherhood... from the moment of conception (ask a mother if life begins at conception?) until you finally die, your life is not YOUR OWN ever again. You are inhabited from within for 9 mos. and then your heart is attached permanently and superglued to another human life for EVER. I was telling someone today that I understand that a pregnant or nursing mother's brain is chemically changed... I believe it's Christianne Northrup who writes about this in one of her books... that the hormones that allow for the sustenance of another's life (in utero or thru breastfeeding)... alters the brain of the mother such that she finds herself more forgetful and not as able to think in the same way she did before. Its as if Nature says .. oh no you don't!! ... you can't move so fast AWAY from this baby.. this fact of this life being dependent on you! ... it's nature ways of assuring that you are THERE for the baby. The conflict comes if and when this pregnant woman or this new mother acts as if she were her old self.... it can be a rude shock to discover that, oh, the energy isn't there for evenings out with friends or the breast milk still flows even if the baby's not with me to slurp it up. WE can not be all things still.... we can be OURSELVES... but we MUST be mother! This new truth is a full body and full person reality.

my new book from pete for Easter

What can happen in a second:
a kiss, a blink, a flick of a switch, a petal falls, a bird alights, a star falls, a dog barks, a heart beats, .. anything can happen in a second. Most of things happen in a response to something set in motion long ago and how we go with the flow determines if things happen at al.. or if we impede that flow of life. Sometimes I wish I could be a hobo.. just walking the roads and hearkening to the demands of the moment. Looking for food, a bathroom, water, a friend. Looking at the cars going by or the fields to my left or right.. I love being on the way.. on our way.. somewhere , almost anywhere. Just going. Why in this day and age as fast as most things travel, information, people in plains, trains and automobiles could moving still be compelling or attractive? Much of the time, I wish that things were moving more slowly. Stop!! but truth be told, life is still movement to me... walking, riding, rowing, talking, sharing... and so what could happen in a second? something or nothing. and I'd prefer the something in this moment. Heart beating, washer washing, quilting, mending, staging, creating, capturing a moment.. I love the moment, but I love the moment that is promised just beyond the moment. Today, Pete said that he's appreciative of this day to "exhale" after the Triduum... and I agree with him. It is such a gift to have this moment to exhale.. and that can happen in a second.. or several.

March 14, 2013 Thursday

I can hear from my chair inside my house the heavy machinery at work on my street as the utilities are being under grounded in my neighborhood. The team has been working for months now and it appears that they have done all the work below ground and now they are re paving the street to look like new. These men who wear the bright yellow green vests and hardhats have been digging, with shovels and earth movers and scraping and sweeping through the cool of the winter months. Now it's warming up and I see them donning sun protection... one man had created a cardboard brim measuring about a foot on all four sides to fit over his hardhat. People are clever. Yesterday, as I waited for the one open lane to open up for me so that I could drive to my house, I shared with the flag man about our new pope. I thought twice about sharing the news. I was still exhilarated after watching the live reports from Rome as our new pope appeared on the balcony to all of us! What if this flagman didn't know what a pope was or didn't care? I went ahead and asked him if he'd heard about the new pope? He showed an interest and so, I told him. He wondered right away: was he an Italian? Well, sorta. His father was an Italian immigrant to Argentina. The flagman perked up... and then I said, and guess what name he chose? "FRANCIS." He's the first Pope Francis! I said. The flagman smiled and said... "cool." and he smiled and nodded again "I like that." Viva el papa!!

January 2, 2013

Behold, another blessed day is about to end. The sun is sinking in the sky, the shadows are lengthening and I am sitting in a cooling house blessed with a new lamp sent by Anne and Jim... it is beautiful. Colorful, gentle light and a fun shape... whose home is to be decided yet. Thank you Anne and Jim! It is a joyful reminder to stay in the LIGHT. HELp me to return again and again to the image given to me in my meditation on Christmas of the tiny face of the Christ child as it looks up from his necessary crib... he can not hold his head up.. all he can do is shine, glowing with new life and hope and love. Perhaps that is the msg of the dream the other night: I dreamt that I was nursing a newborn who was, as I describe at the end of the dream, not thriving. I must create a place, a world where that newborn can thrive.. where the light, the hope and the love offered by this fragile, but incomprehensibly alive newborn can find sustenance and comfort. HOw can I sustain this fragile ecosystem? Stay rooted in prayer. I was able to pray this morning before the nativity set in my room... worried that the words won't penetrate or stay with me.. but my hope is that it will be taken in and will feed me even when I'm not paying attention. The newborn within seeks a loving home... keep working to create a space where the newborn can survive, even thrive, no?

Saturday, December 29, 2012

today is Saturday, December 29th and it is nearing the day when we say goodbye to the year 2012 for keeps. Where to begin... John's bday is the first significant day for me in any year. John turned 19... he was back in school, so we had to send his bday gifts to Santa Cruz. I remember he said it was awkward and that he tried to hide out from his friends because he doesn't like a fuss made. He is true to himself. Then our friend Terri was very ill, dying from cancer still fighting it with chemotherapy. Tommy was in New Haven, enjoying his year w the forestry students. Billy was enjoying his new job with First Solar... still in Oakland I think. Robbie was in Pasadena working for Ubersocial and we had new years day w them in their apartment overlooking the Rose Bowl Parade. What a kick that was.. with their friends, Dave and Elliot. Oh God help me to remember and to savor the moments of together ness and affection. and God bless everyone who is trying to be fully human in the midst of a world freckled with lesser gods. (btw: Danny the Dog, has been a constant buddy... only a few trips to the vet, incl one when he "ate something on a walk w/ Edward" .. but he has enjoyed his walks off leash so much in the park near our house, hallelujah, happy dog and me). Our friend Terri left this earth (but she is near!) in March (26?) and we moved into our house in Oakland a week later. Her memorial service was the day before we moved actually. Pete was involved in the settling of the estate, which involved trips to SF to see Terri's attorney. We were called into action more also with her actual hospitalization and her death because she had no spouse and no one to advocate for her... her friends in the end. She was too big for this world! May, Tommy turned 28 (1984) .. don't know where he was.. oh yeah, Greece for a friend's wedding (George and Ann) and then he spent the summer in Norway, where he could hardly afford to eat. Billy joined him later in the summer and they traveled to Iceland on their way home. July we celebrated Tom and Jackie's 60 wedding anniversary at Sea Ranch with everyone BUT Tommy... We were in three houses... and we were able to have a nice dinner at our house (Sugarman) and a fun trivia night with ?'s about T and J. Sweet! That was a few mos before Jackie left this earth. (She is still with us) She and Tom came over to give us an anniversary card on Aug. 7th and that was the last time I saw her intact. She had a stroke a week later, the day before we flew home from Washington state. Then she stayed in the hospital until she died on Aug. 26th.. her funeral mass was Sept. 2 or 3rd? In the midst of it all, Tommy flew home from NH, CT two weekends in a row. So he was able to say goodbye in person and then for the funeral too. Billy was an ace all the way.. present up close and on duty. It was a blessing to have all the boys, but he was on the frontlines. Robbie flew up... as did Martha? Was Martha already here for her job? Maybe. (Nanette left this earth three days after Jackie did) Robbie moved up after a few weeks (long) interviewing w Google while Martha was working and commuting at/to Wildfire, then Google. Tom began having meals with us immediately after the girls left for their homes. Initially, we drove him, then he drove over and then we drove him home, and now, he has lost his license, because he fell asleep at the wheel... Amy and John G. are with him now and will be for a few wks and then we will be his go to team. John's second yr at SC was challenging too.. he is still sorting out a major course of study. Thinking about mathematics... broke up w/ his girlfriend, with whom he climbed Half Dome in June just before the Sea Ranch trip. He cherishes his friends. We have been pouring on the support and the TLC as best we can, to help him through these developmental humps. Big stuff... I am SO proud of him. Highlights: tea w/ Martha for her bday at the Sheraton Palace... my mother's 78th bday dinner at our house ... the trip to the Olympic Peninsula.... settling in to the new house... our open house w/ friends (sweet)... nice hot soaks in our bathtub... losing 10 lbs!!...
getting a new bed (comfy for the first time in a LONG TIME)... dinners w/ Sally and Jeff... listening to Michael Sweeney, OP in both his Lent talk and his Advent talk.... praying w/ the St. Augustine community... communion w people in the hospital. How can I say thank you enough? Life is a glow with potential .. radiance. (Ah, new life too: Lucca Barsotti, Eva Payapilly, Emma Robinson, and Lola, who is three soon). and the misc. babies I've met in my travels, incl the newborns at the hospital. Gratitude for the 3rd-5th graders we get to spend time with on Sundays too~ and  the beautiful sunsets here we can see, after 9 yrs of being beneath the hills of Moraga at sunset. GIFT.
Thank you God, for this year of blessings... your always being with us... especially thankful for the times when the going has been rough. I have felt your constancy, your strength, your peace. No really I have... just wish I didn't have to dig so deep to find it... be with us and with me, this new year of 2013.. and strengthen me for the journey. In ways it is easier, in ways it is not easier. Be with me, please. and help me to be with you. Amen.

November 27, 2012 Tuesday
The readings from the scripture today are a little harrowing. I likened the Sunday readings upcoming to the kind of dread of childbirth. Especially if one knows from a previous baby what to expect, the descriptions in the book of Revelation don't seem that outrageous. They seem pretty spot on.. it's going to be cataclysmic!! So, get ready, the author says. Nothing is like childbirth... and every woman , unless she's been anesthetized, recalls the experience in living color. It is an out of body experience. maybe the definition of such. Nothing is ever the same again... and the process itself is so powerful that one feels especially grateful to have survived it.. So, I'd like to liken the anticipation of this year's celebration of Christ's birth to the anticipation, the dread and fear, of the overwhelming miracle of birth.  The anticipation is awesome... awe inspiring. Let the anticipation begin! I don't know why this doesn't post on my blog...

Let all who worship the Lamb, come to the Feast... or something like that. Ane stand erect, holding your heads high... from the gospel. Scenes from the Book of Revelation... of destruction and devastation, but that is only for what is not worthy of us human beings. Babylon... that crazy city where all kinds of abominations were happening. So, my take on this is: keep awake and alert to the good, do good and stand in awe of God's blessings, and stand ready to respond to the call and to participate in life. The Pineapple Express is coming through the Bay Area and while there are mild temperatures, things are moving.. the air, the clouds and the sun is somewhere up there, obscured by the moisture in the sky. Rain later today. There is an air of expectancy that comes with this for me. Is it ironic that I lost my credit card? Hmmm. I'll ponder this...

May 16, 2012 Wednesday

Make my faith new! "We should praise God, our Lord, and Christ and the Holy Spirit for all that they have done and do for me and all of creation. The part that caught me: praise God for making me in his own image, a child of God. that one always catches me... to be reminded that I am more than my pettiness, my jealousies, my small thinking. I am also other than my strengths, which are in fact given on loan. "I will praise you Lord, I will praise you Lord, in the assembly of your people, your people, in the assembly of your people, your people, I will praise you Lord." I was caught recently by a painting I saw in Phoebe Hearst's Anthropology Museum at CAL. It was called "Evening Chant" and it was a painting of Native Americans seated and standing together singing with faces upturned to the sky as the sun set. It evoked that sort of praise of the Divine Creator. I discovered another song recently in a book Pete gave me, called Gloryland.   I'd met the song years ago when I was a young Girl Scout. It is in fact a negro spiritual... "way beyond the blue" expressing the hope, the knowledge that one day we will be saved from this life. So, I'm thinking I need to sing more and sing my praises to the Lord. The end. Going to find a songsheet I stole from church, wink.

The day after the calendar feast of the Epiphany and the day before the Church celebrates the feast of the Epiphany on Sunday. I walked our wise men/kings from one end of the book shelf to the manger scene yesterday morning. The walk was like the walk that I used to move Barbie across a floor or the Little Tikes people when I played with our boys' toys. Something in the gesture of tapping the bottoms of these plastic creatures tiny step after tiny step across the wood of this shoulder high book shelf finally reaching the place a few inches away from Mary and her baby and from the (in my imagination) smelly stable where the donkey and the cow rest near the holy family... evoked a quick series of sensations and thoughts. The smells of the place. The effort required of the three kings as they traveled to this place on camelback. The yearning of man throughout history for a Savior. The magic and miracle of seeing truly for the first time the tiny infant, newborn fresh from eternity .. a gift to us here already on earth. The joy of discovering for the first time the miracle of a child.. an awareness that this child is extraordinary.. and will reveal truth to us. about who we are.. children of God, all of us. Part of me wonders: does a child absorb or ingest on a spiritual level the hopes and dreams of its parents and its community. Does a child sense the deepest desires of its mother and father and then live into those dreams? and if a child is fed, emotionally, spiritually, physically and psychologically, does that child then have the freedom to embody and live out those yearnings and that vision? I know better than to credit the human family for all of its children's choices. There is the divine spark within each of us that inspires us to unique responses to the moment by moment callings. I'll call that God.. cuz that works for me. Back to the stable.. and the awestruck three kings... how lovely for Mary and Joseph to have company, and to have them admire their baby. How affirming to have the older generation seek out their child and discover in their very own child, baby Jesus, their hope fed. AS one priest said in this mornings video reflection: now the feast may begin! (The reading for today was about Jesus turning the water into wine at the wedding feast.) That little baby grew up to be that miracle worker... so that we could have endless joy.

Sunday, November 27

Good morning! It is a quiet day. The fog is in and the birds are staying quiet. I guess they are saving their voices until the air is warmer and dryer. Pete and I are staying quiet too. Two boys are still sleeping and we respect sleep: the great healer. Last night, I started feeling very empty and blue. I could feel the panic creeping back up. I told myself though this time that no, I'm not going to allow it to take over. And asked instead: what is my latest thought? That the boys are leaving again. And I am bereft. So, I challenged the thought with this one: oh, how lucky we are to have them had the home for thanksgiving! And what a great hike we had up in the marshes of suisun on Friday, and how nice it was to be with the family! In four weeks we will be all together. To celebrate Christmas . Look to the light, Katie ! To the light! Challenge the melancholy thoughts... I owe so uch to the brave women I know who have lived by this dictum..this season of advent I hope to be companioned by an ever growing light in anticipation of Christmas and I will pray for others who I know are similarly seeking light in their lives. "shine I our hearts, shine in the darkness...Christ be our Light!"

The gift of each day

Today is November 25th, a Friday , and the Friday after thanksgiving day. Today. It is all we have. In the past three- fourvmonths, I have experienced some significant losses that drive that truth home. To speak of them, particularly In writing seems unholy. A dear sister-like friend left this world in early October, my college roommate and friend learned that she her cancer has spread, and our baby moved away to college. At the same time i have experienced a breakdown...physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual. In this same time frame, I've enjoyed so much life too! Time with old friends, real conversation, deep prayer, cirque de soleil!, been on the receiving end of so much kindness, having learned some new life giving tools: meditation, fasting, more interior quiet. I have seen so many healers! A physical therapist, a behavioral cognitive therapist, my GP, my OB/Gyn., my chiropractor, the emergency room twice, my spiritual director, a friend who is studying the Twelve Steps, many women friends who generously shared their stories of living with an aging/changing body. I feel like I am in the middle of a dust devil or a storm. Hence the need for the interior stillness. I am so thankful for all who have helped me to seek that quiet with helpful tools like meditation . And always for Pete, who travels this path with me .. Lovingly and patiently. Thanks be to God.

monday, august 15th, feast of the assumption

Today is my sister in law's birthday and the Feast of the Assumption. One of the reflections I read this morning about this feast says that in the Book of Revelation there is a woman clothed in glory caught in the battle between good and evil. Mary personifies our humanity and in her relationship to her beloved son, she is closer than any of us to the source of our salvation. Her YES to motherhood and to the truth of her son's life, complete with suffering and death, was a supreme act of love. Many many mothers act out this generosity every day. The lucky child who has a mother who recognizes his/her unique and unrepeatable genius. Surely Jesus had that mother. Wouldn't it be funny though, if Mary had been the kind of mother who really didn't GET her child and who often found herself scratching her head and wringing her hands wondering what's with this kid? I'm inclined though to credit Mary with loving Jesus in just the way that allowed him to see clearly, to be free, (free enough to hearken himself to the call of God) , and to be fearless. I know too from experience that all mothers depend on their communities to foster a healthy environment for growing children. Today we celebrate a success story: a woman who raised her child to be a lover of humanity, one whose life was poured out in service to individuals in need of healing and wisdom and truth. Thank you Mary! Today I pray for all mothers who seek to love their children like Mary did her son. and maybe too I'll pray to recognize Mary as my own mother who loves all of us... a mother's love.

june 12, 2011

Road Trip! I remember taking a trip my freshman year of college. My friend, Sue Flickinger, and I headed from GRand Forks, North Dakota and drove due south through South Dakota and Nebraska all the way to Memphis and then east to Florida. Our destination was of course my grandparent's house in Winter Park, a suburb of Orlando. All I remember about the drive was the fact that we switched drivers, (it was her car or her brother's car) and that we could sleep in the back if we needed to. We didn't stop til we got to Memphis! where we hung out with her older brother and then presumably took a shower and slept. Then we drove all the way to Orlando. My grandparents welcomed us and we ate, showered and slept some more where in I enjoyed my first and only hallucinations. I closed my eyes, but all I could see were traffic lights and rear and headlights. It was a little disturbing, but hey, I'd asked for it! Other memories of that trip? we stayed in a beach house w/ Gammy and Grandfather at New Smyrna Beach and that we played bridge or cards with them. I know that I really appreciated the generosity and graciousness of my grandparents.. and I don't know what they made of the two of us. They didn't say anything about the fact that while playing cards, my friend Sue had a habit of making mouth noises when she had to play her cards. She and I got along really well, generally. But the mouth noises really got under my skin. Never said anything though. She was an ace otherwise. So our alpha and omega children are off on their adventure with a friend.. and they will be making their own memories. Via Con Dios, Tommy, Chris, and John.

June 10, 2011

My parents have been married 55 years today. I'm almost 55 years old and I can say that that is a lotta years. In today's gospel, Jesus asks Peter "Do you love me?" and Peter says "You know that I love you." and after three times asking Peter the same questions and Peter acknowledges that yes, he does love our Lord, then Jesus says: Feed my sheep. Peter would go on to spread the good news and in the end was a martyr in Rome. I wonder if Peter ever fished again? or if he abandoned that livelihood and depended on others to feed him as he worked to establish communities of believers. Pete and i met a young woman at the BART station Wednesday night. She had an enormous green backpack on her back and a day pack on her front and looked confused. She was looking for a shuttle that would take her to Amtrak. She had just flown in from Mexico, had taken BART to the Embarcadero in San Francisco, and despite the name -did not provide the embarkation place for her journey. So we tried to help her find her way.. and accompanied her across the Bay on BART to the Oakland City Center stop, where we wished her well.. and advised her to take a taxi if there was no shuttle there. She was headed to Klamath Falls. I hope she made it. Does that count as "feeding my sheep"? It felt like it.. and in the end, as she stepped off of the train, she said with the sweetest sincerity: "Love and Light to you both!" Amen. Italic (Photo: Breton Bay at sunset, May 29, 2011)
